Updated on: 13th May 2019

Disclaimer: This guide is for Indian passport holders travelling to Malaysia as tourists. The information mentioned is up to date at the time of writing the post. I will try to keep it updated. Please refer the official website for specific queries.

Note that there are some websites like http://windowsmalaysia.com/ which claim to offer their services for Visa. However, they are not official government websites and I recommend you avoid them. There are some posts on TripAdvisor about people being duped by them. So PLEASE DO NOT USE THEM.

2 types of visa being given to Indian tourists:

Malaysian electronic visa: Details of Malaysia eVisa:

  1. If you plan to stay for more than 15 days but less than 30 days, you will need to apply for a electronic Visa.

  3. The fee for electronic Visa is USD 25 + Rs.1050.
  4. You can apply 2 weeks in advance from the date of travel. However, if your travel dates change and fall within the 3 months, you need not apply again.

It costs Rs.6000 per applicant. Call them and check with them for the visa fee DD details (helpline no: 022 67866099). The DDs need to be made in certain banks only. Also, this Rs.6000 is divided into 3 parts: Rs.1000 Visa fee, Rs.4600 service fee to VFS and Rs.400 service tax on this Rs.4600. For each applicant, Rs.1000 component has to be paid as separate DD (so if you are 3 ppl, 3 DDs of Rs.1000 each). Rs.4600 can be paid together as DD (so if you are 3 ppl, one DD of Rs.13800 will do) and Rs.400 per application needs to be paid in cash.

However, starting from May 1, 2017, e-NTRI note would be a single page pdf containing the photograph. Step 13: Make sure the documents are in order and details same as that mentioned in the eNTRI note. Edited 20th May 2017: Adding comments of a few users who applied for eNTRI/ eVISA with their experiences. It may not be possible for everyone to go through individual comments.

Comment by Raghav:

Dear All, Last week was the first time i visited Malaysia through Singapore from India. My Travel itenary : BOM-SIN-JHB-KUL-SIN-BOM Malaysia was my last minute plan to add in the travel. Have reached out to lot of people/agents/embassy to apply Visa for Malaysia. Everyone was aware of the Printed Visa and eVisa only – Printed Visa is charged around INE 6500 per person and takes minimum 4-5 working days. eVisa is INR 3500 per person and takes 24-48 working hours. Let me narrate the story before i go to the advantages and disadvantages of the various visas for malaysia including eNTRI. I had spoken to consulate people both in Mumbai and Chennai – they are not sure of eNTRI and asked us to apply for eVisas as am entering from Singapore on Road. The officer has told dont apply eNTRI as no one is sure and go for eVisa. We have applied eVisa for all 3 of us – me, my spouse and kid -> After 22 hrs in working day – my kid’s eVisa got approved and ours 2 got rejected. We were worried as the travel date was just 48 hrs and we need to know why it got rejected as the documents for us and kid are same. We tried reaching out to Mumbai consulate – they said that you need to reach out the online chat customer care from the website. We have reached to the chat customer care and they have said the reasons could be any but the consulate only knows the reason. The below is the chat transcript instructions. Here are some possible reasons your application was rejected: 1) Given/Middle name and Surname must be filled in exactly as per passport. If there is no surname, kindly leave it blank. (Note: Spaces in between names are taken into account as well); 2) New Passport number and also Old Passport number (if any, it’s stated in Last Page of your CURRENT passport. If none, kindly fill in the new passport number); 3) Photo of passport did not meet the standard requirements (i.e: Must either be in the form of e-Photo taken from studio OR scanned from the Original in color, clear with white background and HAS to be cropped & rotated in the upright orientation); 4) Passport Pages did not meet the standard requirements (i.e: Must be scanned from the Original in color, clear, and HAS to be cropped & rotated in the upright orientation) ; 5) A Valid Full Return ticket also known as Roundtrip Ticket from and to your Origin Country MUST be uploaded. Note that all air tickets have to be in color, genuine & not photoshopped or edited in any way. (i.e: India – Malaysia – India); 6) Hotel booking(s) & air ticket(s) must be valid/not passed the actual travel date; 7) Proof of address (i.e: AADHAAR Card, Society Letter, etc.) to be the same address as current resident address in their Country of Origin, if requested; 8) Latest Visited Country – Entry and Exit Stamp (i.e: Page must be scanned from the Original in color, clear, and HAS to be cropped & rotated in the upright orientation); and/or 9) Documents such as hotel bookings, identification card, birth certificates & any other documents requested must be clear, in color, and has to be cropped accordingly & rotated in the upright orientation; and/or9) Ensure all particulars in the form are keyed in correctly (i.e: date of issuance/expiry, passport number, date of birth, etc.) You may re-apply again a fresh application and when you re-apply, kindly bear these in mind. If all documents uploaded correctly and particulars filled in as per instructions and is deemed satisfactory by Immigration Officer, it won’t take more than 24 working hours for Immigration to process your application. We have reached to Mumbai consulate officer post this – and they had requested to write an email to mumbai@imi.gov.my and we have got a similar reply : Dear sir, We do not divulge our reason for rejection. Issuance of visa is under the discretion of the High Commission. You may reapply again should you wish to. However, kindly heed these guides; 1. Ensure all information is keyed in correctly as per details on passport 2. Ensure all uploaded documents (passport pages, proper full air tickets, hotel booking) are original 3. Ensure hotel booking are uploaded; hotel booking must be complete for whole duration of visit in Malaysia (ie; visiting for 5 days, booking must be for complete 5 days) 4. Ensure photos and all documents follow stated specification 5. It will be very helpful to attach a covering letter stating tourist plan and people accompanying on the trip We shall consider your application thoroughly. We got worried as all the documents already provided considers all these mentioned above but still couldn’t find the reason for rejection. So, we dared to proceed with our travel by taking an eNTRI instead of applying eVisa again due to the time limitations. eNTRI is instant and we have received as soon as we made the processing fee charges. We entered through the Second link from Singapore(Tuas checkpoint) and Sultan Abu bakar checkpoint(Malaysia) through a Taxi. The immigration officer verified all the documents and provided the entry permission in 15 minutes. While going to Singapore, i had checked with the Indian immigration officer as well – he was kind and helpful to go through these documents and has suggested that eNTRI is also a very valid entry document and he couldn’t spot much of difference of eNTRI and eVISA except the section/clause that you are allowed. If you are entering from India directly or through the mentioned countries – think if you have all the documents mentioned handy and if you have enough money/credit card/itenary and valid return ticket with all the stay/accommodation details – there is no reason for denial of entry unless any discrepancies. Am furnishing the entire story here so that it will be useful to thousands of users who are planning to visit Malaysia through the new Visa regulations. Thanks, Raghav

Comment by Kalyan (he is an Indian passport holder working in Srilanka on a resident visa. He wanted to visit Malaysia with his Srilankan office colleagues):

Writing this as it may help for anyone with similar situation. Yes I got clarity. If we’re travelling from Sri Lanka, we cannot apply eNTRI. I applied for an eVisa. If you’re travelling from Sri Lanka then the online application should be applied from Sri Lanka itself as the country drop down during registration populates based on the country you’re applying from. And we must specify the current local address as the address we’re staying in the country applying from(that’s what I got to know from online support). I had this country problem as I was an employee in Sri Lanka and was on a vacation in India, where I tried applying for this. So I had my friend in Sri Lanka do all the process for me. Now I’m back in Sri Lanka and we’re travelling on 10th May. And also, additional mandatory documentation is needed for an Indian applying from Sri Lanka. Along with return flight ticket, passport and accomodation, we need employment confirmation letter from the place we’re working, a visa request letter and 4 months bank statement. After applying, I have also been asked for Residence Visa copy of Sri Lanka in my passport and then the visa got approved. It took 3 working days in total.

Hope the post helps tourists travelling to Malaysia. Leave a comment if you have any queries. Or if you have applied and would like to share your experience with other travellers!

  • Hi Priyanka,
Thanks for the wonderful Blog. I am going to apply for evisa single entry to Malaysia. I have a couple of questions.

    1. In January I am going to visit my friend's family for 10 days. I will be staying with them. They will be providing a invitation letter/covering letter for the accommodation. Now the question is to whom the letter should be addressed.

    2. I have ticket booked from Madrid to KL and return from KL to India. I hope this is fine to proceed with.

Hope to get your suggestions before I could apply.

    Thanks.

    cheers,
    siva.

    • Hello Dr.Siva,

Yes you can apply for eVISA. The covering letter could be addressed to "The Officer, Immigration Department, Malaysia". It should include name of all the travellers, Date of travel, your sponsor's name and local ID (if any), address in Malaysia, contact number in Malaysia along with the fact that they will take care of the your accommodation and financial responsibility while you are in the country.

      Hope this helps!
      Priyanka
PS: Is there any reason why you have posted your comment so many times? Were you facing any issue with the site? Enquiring so I can fix problems, if any. Thanks:)

      • Dear Priyanka,
Thanks for your kind reply. Sorry for accidentally spamming the blog. Every time I posted a reply, the page went blank saying that "Server Timed Out". That's why I have posted multiple times, same message with slightly different manner.

        Thanks again.

        cheers,
        Siva.

    • Hi Murali,

      1. I have booked flight and accommodation online with air asia and booking.com. I have received ticket and hotel booking sheet as pdf and downloaded the same. Can these be uploaded directly without scanning?: Yes you can upload the pdf directly.
      2. I believe i have to apply for 3 of us separately in 3 different accounts. Can i upload the same flight and hotel booking for all of us? Note hotel booking shows my name only with 1 more adult and 1 child but without their names listed.: Yes you can use the same hotel booking voucher for all 3, there won't be an issue
      3. Can i add a common covering letter for all 3 of us with our details and itinerary? You do not need a covering letter if you have return flight ticket and hotel booking
      4. Do i have to upload birth certificate for my 8 years old kid?: No, passport is enough
      5. Passport scan must be in landscape or portrait mode? Is jpg format okay? Landscape mode, yes JPG shd be ok. An example is given in the form itself.
      5. We have old cancelled passport? Do we have to scan and upload that too? No, but it is advisable to carry it with you when travelling (no one has asked us for it yet, but better to carry it)
      6. We have immigration stamp only in previous passport. Should we scan that page also? What immigration stamp?
      7. Must we enter old passport no. also in the eNTRI application? I find there is no space for that. It asks only for one passport no.: No you do not need to enter old passport no. It is anyways mentioned in your new passport so authorities can access that detail with your passport no. if reqd

      Hope this helps.
      Priyanka

      • Thank you for the detailed answers.

I had a chat with the chat support in the official window malaysia web site. The below is what the chat rep said:

Don't need to upload old/canceled passport
First page or first two pages of passport enough, last page not required
Upload birth certificate for children below 12 years
Regd. hotel confirmation issue discussed above, the person told to write a covering letter describing the situation and combine with the hotel confirmation pdf

One more question: I have scanned the passport as JPG file. The image has white space in the A4 page below the image. Can I crop the white space on all four sides before uploading? Thanks in advance.

        • Hi Murali,

          • Don't need to upload old/canceled passport: Yes that is right
          • First page or first two pages of passport enough, last page not required: Okay
          • Upload birth certificate for children below 12 years: Birth certificate is not a standard document with immigration authorities. I am not sure why the customer care asked for it because passport has birth details. We have never ever used birth certificate for our son. Nonetheless, no harm is being cautious.
          • Regd. hotel confirmation issue discussed above, the person told to write a covering letter describing the situation and combine with the hotel confirmation pdf: Again, we have always used the same pdf with one person's name on it. Its standard and authorities know families won't have all their names in the document. But go with what they suggested.
          • One more question: I have scanned the passport as JPG file. The image has white space in the A4 page below the image. Can I crop the white space on all four sides before uploading?: I suggest you create the account and then look at the sample image there. It will give you an idea of how the scan should look like.

          Hope this helps!

  • Hi,

My name is Zakir and I have received my Malaysia single entry employment pass visa which will get stamped once I reach Malaysia.

I would like to take my wife and kid along with me for 10 days, hence I’m planning to take them on eNTRI visa as I don’t have time to apply for eVisa or dependent visa. Would this be a feasible option.

Also regarding the stay, my company will book my stay and can I show the same accommodation which is booked under my name when I’m applying for the eNTRI visa.

Please let me know if there would be any challenges I might face. Just wanted to make sure the travel hassle free.

    Thanks,

    Zakir

    • Hi Zakir,

I don't think there will be any issue in either eNTRI or accommodation in your name. However, please call one of the Malaysian embassies to confirm since this yours is not a regular tourist visa. Their phone numbers are listed in the blog post itself.

      Thanks,
      Priyanka

      • Thank you Priyanka for you quick response.

I called up Malaysia Embassy Chennai, immigration officer mentioned i can take my spouse and kid provided there return ticket is also booked.

        Thanks,
        Zakir

  • Hi this is a very informative blog. My query is that we are traveling to Malaysia and Singapore next month in May 2019. Our itinerary is India > Kuala Lumpur > Langkawi > Singapore > India (layover at Kuala Lumpur for 4 hours). Does this layover come under 'Transit'?  But our ticket is a single PNR from Singapore to India, so I suppose we wont be crossing immigration at Malaysia again. Are we still eligible for eNTRI visa or do we have to take eVisa?

    • Hi Sushree,

I think you have some confusion about immigration and visa.
Are you going to stay in KUL/Langkawi? If yes, you will anyways be needing a visa. Since you are entering Malaysia only once (both KUL and Langkawi are international entry points for Malaysia); you are eligible for eNTRI. If your ticket from Langkawi to Singapore via KUL is on one PNR; your immigration will happen in Langkawi. If Langkawi to KUL is one PNR and KUL to Singapore is another; you will do immigration at KUL.

      Hope it helps!
      Priyanka

  • Hi,
I am planning to travel to Langkawi from New Delhi (New Delhi - KL- Langkawi). Is it permissible as per eNTRI terms and conditions? I am confused as while booking tickets link was saying I must be having a non stop flight.

    • Hi Dr.Abhishek,

I was travelling so could not reply earlier. You can apply for eNTRI because you have a direct flight from India to Malaysia (KL). Your immigration will happen in KL itself.

      Hope this helps!
      Priyanka

  • Hi Priyanka,

    Excellent blog.

    Need a quick info.

I along with family are planning a trip to Malaysia.

    Itinerary as follows:

    Bangalore - Chennai - Kualalampur - Siem Reap - Bangkok/Krabi - Bangalore.

I guess this does not qualify for eNTRI hence would need eVisa. Please confirm.

    • You are right Abhinav. This does not qualify for eNTRI. You will need to apply for eVISA.

      • Hi Priyanka,

Posting my question as a reply since there is some recaptcha error while posting regular comments.

You mentioned we need to share our itinerary with the immigration officer at the entry.

I have my return tickets booked from India to kuala lumpur, but I may be travelling to Langkawi . I haven't planned my itinerary as I am visiting a relative there and will decide once I reach.

Will not having an itinerary be an issue? Also, do I need an invitation letter from my relative or a cover letter written by me would do?

I am departing on 9th september. Need help urgently.

        Thanks.

        • Hi Rhea,

Travelling to Langkawi will not be an issue since its a domestic travel and your onward and return flights are already in place(assuming you have return tickets to and from KUL). You need not tell the immigration officer any tentative plans. Just let them know you are in KUL and returning on so and so dates.

Yes, its always advisable to have an invitation letter from your relative. We stayed with a friend the first time we travelled to Hong Kong. Though its rare, the immigration officer called to check with him about our plans and confirm our stay. It may not happen to you, but its better to be safe in situations like these.

          Hope it helps!

PS: Thanks for pointing out the recaptcha issue, will look into it :)

  • Hi Priyanka,
Two of my friends and I plan to visit Malaysia during may. It would be helpful if you could answer some of the queries i have.
Our itinerary includes Mumbai-> Hyderabad-> Kuala lumpur (stay for two nights) -> Bali (stay for three nights) -> Kuala lumpur (transit only, layover of only 2 hours, connecting flight) -> Hyderabad -> Mumbai

1- according to what I have learnt from different sources, since i dont have a direct flight to india while returning from Singapore/Thailand/Brunei, we are not eligible for single entry eVisa ( which im guessing is eNTRI). I can only apply for the Multi entry eVisa for 15 or 30 days. Am i correct?

2- the three of us are students, currently studying and living in Mumbai, but our permanent addresses, as on the passports, are not of Mumbai but of Jaipur and New Delhi. So is it possible we are going to face any issues in the visa due to that? If yes, then what further documents will we have to provide during the application?

3- Given the possible issues that can happen because of our addresses, would you recommend that we apply for the visa through a travel agent? or do it ourselves?

    Hope you reply soon.
    Thanks.

    • Hi Sana,

eNTRI has been discontinued from April 2018 until further notice (I have put a note at the beginning of the post too!). You anyways would not have been eligible for it, given your itinerary. You can apply for eVISA all by yourself, no need of going through an agent. Your address on the passport is of no significance here.

      Hope it helps!

  • Hi I'm an Indian , living in Lagos , Nigeria along with my wife and 2 kids. I'm planning to visit Malaysia (KL + Langkawi ) from 17th May to 27th May and then go back to Mumbai. I've done all my bookings , hotels and cruise liners and also created my account in official website of malaysian online visa. (https://www.windowmalaysia.my). although since my all the bookings are confirmed and paid, I'm highly concern of my visa rejection due to some minor issues like photo and all. how and who could assist me in handling this. please guide

    • Hi Hiren,

I am sorry, I do not deal with travel agents etc. The process of applying for eVISA is very simple and has been explained in detail on my blog. If you are not sure you can do it yourself, you will have to try it through some travel agent.

  • Hi ,
Me and my husband plan to visit Malaysia (langhawi ) on last week of May 2018 . During that time the visa waiver is not there so we should be going with e-visa right ? We are staying in Malaysia for 6-7 days only

    • Hi Parvathy,

eNTRI has been extended starting 10th April. If you have not applied for visa yet, you can submit your application for eNTRI.

      Enjoy your trip:)

  • Hi,

I am travelling with my family to Malaysia on 23rd April 2018 and had couple doubts..

1- How much are the fees for EnTRI visa and eVisa?
2 - I wish to go to Singapore for a day out of my 7 days trip and come back to Malaysia by bus. What visa do i need?
3 - How much are the bus charges from Malaysia to Singapore?
4 - What visa do i need to travel for a day and come back next day for Singapore?
5 - What is the best way to get the white background photo as per their specification for a visa so that it is not rejected?

    Thanks and please revert back.

    • Hi Manan,

eNTRI has been continued again starting 10th April. If you still haven't taken Visa and you need a single entry visa, you can apply for eNTRI.

      Hope it helps!
      Priyanka

    • Hi Manan,

eNTRI was started in April 2017 and is effective for one year from 1 April 2017 to 31. March 2018. There is no update yet if you can apply for it after March 2018. However, since eNTRI is valid for 3 months from the date of approval, one can get eNTRI before 31st March and travel in April.

Applying for eNTRI is not feasible in your case though, because it is a Single Entry Visa. You cannot go to Singapore and then come back to Malaysia. You will have to apply for multiple entry eVISA. Regarding your other queries:

1- How much are the fees for EnTRI visa and eVisa? :Its mentioned in the blog post itself, please check https://www.coveringmiles.com/apply-malaysia-tourist-evisa-entri-online/.
2 – I wish to go to Singapore for a day out of my 7 days trip and come back to Malaysia by bus. What visa do i need? eVISA
3 – How much are the bus charges from Malaysia to Singapore? It depends on where in Malaysia you are travelling from. Check on http://www.easybook.com and other links on Google.
4 – What visa do i need to travel for a day and come back next day for Singapore? You need a proper SG visa. Check my post https://www.coveringmiles.com/how-to-apply-for-a-singapore-tourist-visa/ to know more about how to apply.
5 – What is the best way to get the white background photo as per their specification for a visa so that it is not rejected?: Most of the good photo studio guys are well aware of how to get Visa photos. If the photo meets requirements, Visa is not rejected based on it.

      Hope it helps!

      • Can i apply for an Entri visa myself as I am scared for the documents to be uploaded correctly or no and the photo size and all or do i need to go to a visa agent?

Secondly... can i take Entri visa from here and then can i go to Malaysia and then apply for a singapore visa? is that possible?

        • You can apply for visa yourself. The blog post describes step by step process of how to do it. Also, you cannot apply for Singapore visa from Malaysia. For every country you are visiting in your itinerary, you should have a valid visa before you leave India.
